Anomaly is a work on alleged UFO sightings in Belgium in 1989. They started in Liège when two gendarmes on a hill near a chapel saw anomalies in the sky which they defined as UFO’s. These phenomena were described as three lights triangularly positioned.

The UFO “fever” - as the media would later call it - quickly spread in the south of Belgium.Thousands of people testified that they saw something strange in the sky. It got to the point where Colonel; Wilfried De Brouwer of the Belgian Air Force got involved. He was absolutely convinced that this aerial phenomenon was indeed a UFO.

In the early 1990s, Patrick Maréchal, a man from the village of Petit-Rechain, came with the first ‘reliable’ photo of the UFO. This photo was examined by NATO experts . It served as evidence for years supporting the credibility of the UFO. In 2011 Maréchal confessed that the image was staged.

The thin line between fact and fiction is central in this work. The work is a reflection of the story and its deceptive nature. It tells the story in a misleading way thus referring to the factual mass psychosis that took place in reality. In this work the artist emphasizes on and plays with the fact that people unquestionably merge inexplicable impressions in to a new alternative truth.

Many images are not ‘real’ or are distorted by context. The insert of documents and text enhances the credibility factor. The work also filters the information, thus further manipulating the viewer.

Like the story, the work remains an unsolved case, a mixture of different opinion.
